Porto Moniz

Located on the northwest coast of the island of Madeira, Porto Moniz is a charming town known for its natural beauty and unique volcanic features. The town is named after its founder, João Gonçalves Zarco, who was the first captain of Madeira and gave the town its name in honor of his son-in-law, D. Moniz de Perestrello.

One of the main attractions in Porto Moniz is the natural swimming pools, which were formed by lava flows and are filled with seawater. These pools provide a safe and enjoyable way to swim and relax, with crystal clear waters and stunning views of the ocean. The pools are surrounded by black volcanic rocks, which provide a contrast to the bright blue waters and add to the natural beauty of the area.

In addition to the swimming pools, Porto Moniz is also home to several beautiful beaches, including Praia do Norte and Praia do Madalena do Mar. These beaches are great for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing, and offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Aside from its natural beauty, Porto Moniz is also home to several cultural and historical attractions. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, for example, is a beautiful 17th-century church that is located in the center of town and features a stunning baroque altar. The town is also home to the Museum of Volcanism, which provides visitors with an in-depth look at the geological history of Madeira and the formation of the island.

Overall, Porto Moniz is a charming town that offers something for everyone. Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, swim in the natural pools, or learn about the island’s history and culture, Porto Moniz has something to offer.
