Pico do Arieiro Walk
This is a hike across rugged terrain along a section of the island’s core mountain series. The vistas are simply breathtaking. This route is remarkable in that it connects Madeira Island’s two highest summits, Pico Ruivo (1861 m) and Pico do Arieiro (1817 m). Aside from witnessing some of nature’s most stunning landscapes, such as the oldest Laurissilva forest in existence, you also have an opportunity to observe several endemic birds on the island as well as Europe’s most endangered seabird.
These ancient trees are located right before you arrive at Pico Ruivo, are several hundred years old, and were already there when Zarco discovered and landed on the island for the first time. The view from Pico Ruivo is spectacular; on a clear day, you can see for miles! Despite its popularity, the Pico do Arieiro walk is not suitable for vertigo sufferers. Suitable strong footwear and clothes are required no matter what time of the year you are performing this popular Madeira walk.
